MANCHESTER UNITED CRASHED OUT FA CUP

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup third round for only the third time in 42 years as the club’s crisis deepened amid a torrent of boos at the final whistle.

Four months after being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Grimsby Town, United have now exited both domestic cup competitions at the first hurdle.

It is 54 years since United’s chances of winning a trophy were effectively over this early in a season.

On that occasion, Wilf McGuinness had just been sacked with Sir Matt Busby returning on an interim basis.

United are expected to appoint a caretaker manager in the coming days to replace Ruben Amorim until the end of the season and the new man – which is likely to be Michael Carrick or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – will take over a club in a tailspin.
