BURKINA FASO SACK BRAMA TRAORE AFTER AFCON EXIT

‎The Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF) has dismissed head coach Brama Traoré and his entire technical staff following the national team’s disappointing exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), bringing an abrupt end to his tenure in charge.

‎The decision comes after Burkina Faso were knocked out of the tournament at the last-16 stage, suffering a humiliating 3–0 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast in the ongoing competition in Morocco. The heavy loss not only exposed tactical and defensive frailties within the squad but also fell well below the federation’s stated ambition of reaching at least the semi-finals.

‎Federation Explains Decision
‎In an official statement released on Tuesday, the FBF confirmed the termination of Traoré’s contract, citing failure to meet performance targets as the primary reason for the decision.

‎“The technical performance of the national team did not align with the objectives set before the tournament,” the statement read. “The Federation had clearly outlined a minimum target of reaching the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.”

‎The federation also thanked Traoré and his staff for their service, acknowledging their efforts while stressing the need for a new direction.

‎A Painful AFCON Campaign
‎Burkina Faso entered the tournament with high expectations, buoyed by a squad that blended experienced internationals with promising young talent. However, inconsistency throughout the group stage raised early concerns, which were brutally confirmed in the knockout phase against Ivory Coast.

‎The Elephants dominated the encounter from start to finish, capitalizing on defensive lapses and a lack of cohesion in Burkina Faso’s midfield and back line. By the final whistle, the 3–0 scoreline reflected a gulf in organization, intensity, and tactical execution.

‎For many supporters, the defeat was particularly painful given Burkina Faso’s recent history as AFCON dark horses, including a runner-up finish in 2013 and a third-place finish in 2017.

‎End of the Road for Traoré
‎Brama Traoré had been appointed with the task of stabilizing the national team and guiding them back to continental relevance. While his tenure showed moments of promise, critics frequently questioned his tactical flexibility and team selection, concerns that intensified as the tournament progressed.

‎The last-16 exit proved to be the final straw for the federation, which had made it clear that anything short of a deep run would be unacceptable.

‎Focus Shifts to 2027 AFCON Qualification
‎With Traoré’s departure confirmed, Burkina Faso has officially launched the search for a new coaching staff. According to the federation, the appointment process will prioritize technical expertise, long-term planning, and the ability to develop local talent.

‎The immediate focus will be on rebuilding the squad and preparing for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda — the first time the tournament will be staged across three East African nations.

‎FBF officials believe that early planning and decisive leadership are essential if Burkina Faso are to return to being serious contenders on the continental stage.

‎Uncertain Future, Renewed Expectations
‎As the dust settles on another AFCON disappointment, questions remain over the direction of Burkinabè football. Supporters will be hoping that the next coaching appointment brings renewed discipline, tactical clarity, and a return to the fighting spirit that once made Burkina Faso one of Africa’s most respected teams.

‎For now, the message from the federation is clear: mediocrity will not be tolerated, and change is necessary to restore pride and ambition to the Stallions.
