The Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi, has announced that Tanzania has officially joined the list of competitive teams at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following Taifa Stars’ historic qualification for the Round of 16 for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Speaking on January 8, 2026, at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam during the official reception of Taifa Stars after their return from Morocco, Prof. Kabudi praised the team for demonstrating a high level of competitiveness, discipline, and commitment, achievements that have earned Tanzania great respect across Africa.

“Taifa Stars have shown exceptional skill and total dedication. With this achievement, Tanzania is no longer just a participant at AFCON, but a true competitor,” said Prof. Kabudi.

He described the milestone as a major national victory and noted that it has laid a strong foundation for preparations ahead of the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

Prof. Kabudi further revealed that President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, issued special instructions for the team’s reception and is scheduled to host the Taifa Stars squad for a luncheon on January 10, 2026, as a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the nation.

“The President instructed me to personally welcome the team. I sincerely thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her significant investment in the sports sector, the positive results of which are now evident,” he said.

He also thanked residents of Dar es Salaam and Tanzanians at large for turning out in large numbers to welcome the team, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace, unity, and national solidarity.
